Abstract

The effects of condensed and hydrolysable tannin extracted fromevergreen oak leaves (Quercus ilex L.) were tested on two species ofCollembola. Concentrations lower than those present in the litter leaveswere toxic to these insects. Detoxification by washing with rainwaterand biodegradation of tannic compounds are necessary for litterdecomposition, in which microarthropods participated, to occur.
