| Abstract | Shoots of Quercus ilex gain more efficient ability to become frost- hardened in winter during the course of ageing. The greatest increase in frost- hardiness occurs within the first five winters. Full capacity for frost-resistance is not reached until the plant enters its reproductive phase. Roots do not change their resistance pattern with age. |
